MOFGA Events

Throughout the year, MOFGA hosts hundreds of meetings, workshops, conferences, dinners and festive gatherings. Many take place at our Common Ground Education Center in Unity, Maine. And many more happen at farms, businesses and other venues throughout the state. We maintain a comprehensive Calendar of Events on MOFGA.org related to farming, gardening and environmentally friendly living Maine and the Northeast.

Charcuterie Series

January 16 - February 6, 2018 - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, Smith's Smokehouse, Monroe, Maine. Join Andy Smith of Smith's Smokehouse and delve into the basics of charcuterie through a series of four workshops. Fee: $350 for MOFGA members and $400 for non-members. Bring your own lunch to this event. Information and registration

Seasonal Cooking Class: Winter

February 21, 2018 – Wednesday, 5:30 p.m., MOFGA's kitchen at the Common Ground Education Center, Unity, Maine. Join Chef Frank Giglio in the MOFGA kitchen to learn about Maine seasonal cooking. Our winter class features buckwheat injera with whitefish spread, shredded beet salad, cornbread with herb butter, chicken soup with verdurette, and acorn brownies! $35; $25 for MOFGA members. Advanced Business Planning with Julia Shanks

February 25, 2018 – Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., hosted by Coastal Enterprises Inc., 30 Federal St., Brunswick, Maine. Full-day workshop designed to help established and beginning farmers understand the financials of their business and learn how to make informed decisions to increase profits. Instructor Julia Shanks is the author of "The Farmer's Office: Tools, Tips and Templates to Successfully Manage a Growing Farm Business." $100 per person; $135 for two people coming from the same farm. Organic Orcharding Workshop: Pruning Fruit Trees

March 10, 2018 – Sat., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., three locations: College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor; Morning Glory Farm, Bethel; MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center, Unity. Fee: $50; $35 for MOFGA members. Please bring your own bag lunch. Learn to prune fruit trees to encourage vigorous growth, heavy fruit set and quality fruit yield. Collection of scion wood and storage will also be discussed. Registration

Maine Permaculture Design Course

May 5, 2018 – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center, Unity, Maine.  Be part of creating a better future. Change the way you see the world. Join The Resilience Hub as it approaches its 20th internationally-recognized Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course. This one-weekend-per-month format is ideal for anyone who would not typically be able to take two weeks off from life/work to take an “immersion” PDC. Our summer Maine PDC this year returns to MOFGA's Common Ground Education Center in Unity, Maine. The expansive campus and spacious buildings make for an ideal learning environment within traveling distance to many field trip sites. Registration

Organic Farming Principles & Practices: Livestock 101 - Basic Handling
